The 26th Queen Sirikit Cup Amateur Ladies Asian
Invitational Golf Team Championship organized by China Golf
Association will be played at WuYi Fountain Palm Golf Club,
Jiangmen, China on April 12th till 14th, 2004. This is the
event second time held in China since 1992 at Chung Shan
Hot Spring Golf Club.
The "Queen Sirikit Cup" was an inaugural event
played in Bangkok in 1979 at a time when ladies golf in
Southeast Asia was in its infant age. Although the World
Amateur Golf Championship was popular, there were no Asian
ladies amateur event was considered beyond the standard
of women's amateur golf in many countries. In this regard,
the founding president of the Thailand Amateur Ladies Golf
Association, Mom Kobkaew Abhakara, sent a request to the
Royal Family for a trophy in Her Majesty's named the "Queen
Sirikit Cup" was granted and a tournament designed
to women's amateur golf in the region was born. The first
event was held in 1979 and 12 countries were invited. Nine
countries arrived Bangkok in Februrary 1979 to compete the
tournament and Japan took the first trophy while Thailand
finished runner-up.
Over the past twenty years history and development, the
Queen Sirikit Cup Amateur Ladies Asian Invitational Golf
Team Championship had been grown to recruit fourteen countries
in the Asia-Pacific region from as far south as New Zealand
stretch to north as Korea and west as India. Every country
will take turn to venue the event to make it the world's
one of the most important. To increase the strength and
standard of play of the event thus to develop the women's
amateur golf to reach the most impressive milestone is the
very reason for the event's founding.
The first Queen Sirikit Cup held in China was in 1992 at
Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club which had brought the world's
attention to the ladies golf in China. The host venue of
next year, WuYi Fountain Palm Golf Club was invested by
Hong Kong Macau celebrity Dr. Stanley Ho. The club is located
in the city of Jiangmen which is a famous overseas Chinese
hometown in Guangdong Province. The WuYi 27-hole championship
golf course was designed by world renowned Nicklaus Design.
Under the leadership of Mr. Aylwin Tai, the Director and
General Manager of the club, WuYi Fountain Palm Golf Club
has been ranked as one of the best in China, no matter for
its course maintenance or its club management. Since the
club's opening in 2000, it has held several big events such
as the 2000 WuYi Cup Invitational Golf Tournament, the Nomura
Cup Asia Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship in 2001,
the China Open Amateur Men's & Women's Golf Championship
in 2001 and continuous four years'(2000-2003) Angela Leong
Cup Junior Golf Championship. The success of the tournaments
in the past few years had proved that the facilities and
paying effort of the club had brought out its ability and
experience for big tournaments.
The co-organizer of the 26th Queen Sirikit Cup is Richtone
Worldwide Holdings Ltd., a well known golf company in the
China's golf industry. The company has signed a 15 years
contract with Volvo Car Corporation and China Golf Association
in 1995 to jointly host the Volvo China Tour, which is the
first PGA Tour in China. This inaugural tournament has been
successfully held for eight years which had been considered
one of the most important golf event in Asian region. As
the vision of the company, Richtone Worldwide Holdings Ltd.
has adopted its golf business in China and other region
since its opening in 1994. Many major golf events and activities
in China had been organized by the company in the past years
like the China Women Amateur Golf Championship in 1996,
1998 Ericsson China International Amateur Golf Invitational
Tournament, Omega Monthly Medals 1998, Lakewood Golf League,
Eric Tsang Amateur Golf Fund, 1999 Ericsson China International
Golf Invitational Tournament, 1999 Volvo City Team Challenge
Tournament, 2000 Ericsson China PGA Challenge(Guangzhou,
Macau, Shanghai, Beijing), 2000 WuYi Angela Leong Cup Junior
Golf Championship, 2000 WuYi Cup International Golf Invitational
Tournament, Nomura Cup Asia Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship
and China Open Amateur Men's and Women's Golf Championship.
