¡¡The Chinese team again played very solid golf
today to move into clear second place after the second round
of the 26th Queen Sirikit Cup ¨C Asia Pacific's premier ladies
amateur golf event. A one under par 71 from reigning China
Junior Champion, Feng Shan Shan, was backed up by an even
par 72 from Shang Li Yan to give a total of 143 for the
day and 289 for the Championship so far. This allowed them
to peg a shot back on the highly fancied Korean team who
finished the day on even par 144 for a three under par total
of 285.
¡¡ ¡°It was another excellent display from the China team,¡±
said tournament director, Alistair Polson ¡°The Chinese girls
are up against the best female amateur golfers in Asia Pacific
and they're out matching nearly all of them. If they play
as well tomorrow they could be in with a chance of the title
for the first time. It's going to be a very exciting final
round tomorrow.¡±
¡¡Shang Lin Yan felt the gap between China and Korea could
have been narrowed further. "I three putted on both
the 15th and 17th,¡°the Shanghai golfer said shaking her
head in frustration. "Each time I missed from about
two feet.¡±
¡¡However the China captain, Soong Liang Liang, was pleased
with the result so far. ¡°We are only four shots behind and
this is a team event so you can have big swings in the cores
from one hole to the next,¡°he said. "We also know that
we can play better and that makes us feel confident that
we have a chance winning.¡±
¡¡Chinese Taipei fell back into third position with a 148
total today and now lie three shots adrift of the China
team and one ahead of Japan and Thailand. The expected surge
from Australia and New Zealand didn't materialize with both
teams struggling on the greens. ¡°We couldn't sink a putt,¡±said
Australian team captain, Joanne Watkins. ¡°The grass is different
from back home but it's very good experience and something
we'll have to take note of for the future.¡±
¡¡Hong Kong finished the day in 10th position on 309 total.
